Experimental Observation of Possible Pressure-Induced Phase Transformation in GdAlO3 Perovskite Using In Situ X-ray Diffraction

چکیده
Gadolinium aluminate perovskite (GdAlO3) was studied at high pressures of up to 23 GPa in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) using monochromatic synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Evidence pressure-induced phase transformation from orthorhombic (Pbnm) rhombohedral (R3¯c) structure observed 21 and further proved by DFT calculations. Before transition, the volumetric ratio polyhedron A B (i.e., VA/VB for ABX3 general notation) Pbnm continuously increased towards ideal value five indicating decrease structural distortion as opposed trend many other perovskites (e.g., CaSnO3, CaGeO3, MgSiO3 NaMgF3). Pressure–volume data were fitted third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation state yielding bulk modulus (Ko) 216 ± 7 with pressure derivative (Ko′) 5.8 (fixed). This work confirms higher symmetry previously predicted GdAlO3 perovskite.

Article history: Received 17 March 2016 Accepted 2 May 2016 Available online 24 May 2016 Certain alumino-silicates display exotic properties enabled by their framework structuremade of corner-sharing tetrahedral rigid units. Using in situ diamond-anvil cell x-ray diffraction (XRD), we study the pressure-induced transformation of β eucryptite, a prototypical alumino-silicate that undergoes a pha...
متن کاملStudy of Two Phase Fluid Flow in Water Wet Reservoir Rocks by Using X-Ray In situ Saturation Monitoring
Displacement of oil and water in porous media of reservoir rocks is described by relative permeability curves, which are important input data for reservoir performance simulation and drive mechanism studies. Many core studies, such as multiphase relative permeability, capillary pressure and saturation exponent determination, depend on the volume fractions of multiphase flui...
متن کاملIn situ observation of the thermally induced growth of platinum-nanoparticle catalysts using high-temperature X-ray diffraction.
Fundamental understanding about the thermal stability of nanoparticles and deliberate control of structural and morphological changes under reactive conditions is of general importance for a wide range of reaction processes in heterogeneous and electrochemical catalysis. Herein, we present a parametric study of the thermal stability of carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles at 80 °C and 160 °C, with...
متن کاملDetermination of cristobalite phase content in ceramic cores using various X-ray quantitative phase analysis methods
The aim of this research is to investigate different X-ray based quantitative phase analysis methods for determination of cristobalite phase content in ceramic cores. For this purpose, four popular routes including peak absolute intensity method, relative intensity ratio method, direct or calibration method and internal standard (or Alexander-Klug) method have been chosen. Some control samples ...
متن کاملPressure-induced phase transitions in iron-filled carbon nanotubes: X-ray diffraction studies
High-pressure x-ray-diffraction studies have been carried out upto 20 GPa on iron-filled multiwalled carbon nanotubes ~MWNTs!. The pressure dependence of the intertubular spacing d0 of the filled MWNTs shows a sharp change at 9 GPa which is not observed in pristine MWNTs. The iron present as nanowires inside the MWNT is in the form of a-Fe and Fe3C. Both of these phases show higher compressibil...
